Memorial garden plaques guidelines

In order to enhance the relevance of the Memorial Garden adjacent to the Chapel, the Trustees have decided to permit the installation of plaques on the inside walls of the feature.  This will enable appropriate organisations to commemorate their involvement in the Falkland Islands conflict, as well as permit a modest element of fundraising towards the Chapel’s upkeep.

The Trustees have sourced a supply of suitably sized blank plaques and, once the wording and layout have been agreed, will arrange for the plaque to be etched and then installed in the Memorial Garden.  Each plaque will be made from 12mm granite-textured Corian, with the citation and any badges or emblems etched into the surface.  The size of each plaque is 210mm x 297mm, in a landscape format.

The plaques are intended to commemorate the involvement of units or organisations involved in the conflict or its aftermath (the names of the fallen associated with the organisation may be included, if desired).  Plaques should not, however, commemorate solely an individual, as their names are recorded at the entrance to the Chapel (individuals can also be remembered by sponsoring a chair).

The cost of a plaque is set at £1,500, which includes a contribution towards the Chapel’s upkeep.

Guidance on Plaque Artwork:

  • It is the responsibility of the proposer to arrange the artwork for the plaque and to source any high-resolution images that may be required.  The artwork is to be set out on white A4 paper, in a landscape orientation.
  • Once installed, the plaque will have the appearance of a dark grey material with etched areas in a lighter, contrasting colour.
  • Citations are to be in keeping with the solemn purpose of the Memorial Garden.
  • A combination of wording and images is acceptable, making best use of the space available.
  • Wording should be sized to be readily legible.  Any typeface can be accommodated, although rounded script, such as Calibri, is often more pleasing to the eye.
  • Punctuation is not generally included on plaques, unless essential to comprehension.
  • Images, such as crests, should be presented as line drawings; the inclusion of colour is acceptable, if that is how they are normally viewed (the software associated with the plaque production process will make the necessary colour adjustments to render the final image in black and white).
  • Images must be of as high a definition as is possible, to aid the clarity and sharpness of the end product.  Crests should be on a white background.
  • The finally agreed design should be on a white background and be submitted as a Word document.  It will be presented to the plaque supplier in a PDF format.
  • The Trustees reserve the right to approve all final designs, to ensure that they are in keeping with the ambience and intent of the Memorial Garden.
  • Once the plaque design is agreed, the cost of £1,500 becomes payable.  The Trustees will then arrange for the plaque to be etched and installed.

Those organisations contemplating installing a plaque are encouraged, in the first instance, to discuss their ideas with the Memorial Chapel’s Secretary: Angela Perry MBE, c/o Pangbourne College, Pangbourne, Reading, Berks  RG8 8LA; Telephone: 01295 738123; E-Mail: angelaeap@aol.com.
